It’s imgur time!

If you’re looking for a fun way to procrastinate and waste some time during lockdown, then look no further than imgur (pronounced image-er).

You may not have heard of it before, but it’s actually one of the internet’s favourite image hosting and sharing sites. Free and easy to use, you can be an active poster or a passive lurker – no one will judge you.

Described in its own words:

“Imgur is an image community that creates, consumes and shares tomorrow's viral images, today. Millions of images are uploaded each day to Imgur, where they are distilled by the Imgurian community into a stream of the Internet's best images and viewed billions of times. Expect to laugh, cry and be inspired by the images you'll find here.”

And it’s true.

The content varies from humorous clips and gifs to news articles, to memes, to behind-the-scenes of interesting jobs, to science experiments, to real-world stories from the users’ lives and everything in between.

You can search for specific themes and when you come across a post that you think is great you can like and comment. You can also save posts to your profile by favouriting and even sort them into folders.

If you’re looking to become a real Imgurian there are a few quirks you should know:

  • You may be asked to use a ‘banana for scale’. This means placing a banana in the frame of your photograph to reveal the true-to-life size of another object.
  • Meet the imguraffe. The imguraffe is the official mascot of imgur. It’s commonly seen wearing a top hat and a monocle (as you do).
  • From OP to TL;DR. Here’s a list of abbreviations you might come across.

imgur is a true treasure trove of images and GIFs which really does showcase the magic of the internet. But beware, once you fall down this rabbit hole of scrolling you will lose yourself for hours, if not days!

And if you’re worried about the effect all that scrolling will have on your data, why not grab yourself a SMARTY Unlimited SIM and relax knowing you’re covered for anything.
